Family of three killed, one hurt in crash on Sabah flyover

KOTA KINABALU: A father and his two children were killed while a boy is in critical condition following an accident along the Lintas flyover near here.

The deceased comprising Jimmykal Jaujali Assam, 44, his daughter - Sazfa, 11, and son - Alkail, 16, were pronounced dead on the spot while a four-year-old boy, who is the man’s nephew, sustained severe head injuries following the 11.25pm accident on Friday (Aug 5).

Kota Kinabalu OCPD Asst Comm Zaidi Abdullah said initial investigations found that the accident occurred out of carelessness.

He said the 16-year-old and four-year-old boys were thrown out of the vehicle following the impact of the crash while the remaining two were badly crushed in their seats.

“Medical officials on the scene pronounced the father and his two children dead at the scene while the four-year-old boy was given emergency treatment before he was sent to the hospital,” he said.

ACP Zaidi said the last address of the three deceased, who were Filipino nationals, was at Angkasa Apartment, Rampayan not far from the state capital while the injured victim, also a Filipino, lived in Kg Belud Tanduk Kulambai, Kota Belud district.

“Preliminary investigations also found that the driver had been speeding on the slippery road prior to the accident, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the flyover pillar,” he said.

Earlier, state Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Misran Bisara said they received a call about the accident at 11.31pm, and had responded.

He said firemen had a tough time getting the pinned victims out of the vehicle as the front part of the car was badly damaged.

“We handed over the bodies to the cops for further action after they were taken out of the vehicle,” he said.

He said operations ceased at 12.43am after firemen checked and swept the area of any hazardous elements.
