PETALING JAYA: More than two-thirds of the bail set for the woman charged with insulting Islam during a performance at a comedy club's open mic night has been raised through crowdfunding.

Siti Nuramira Abdullah’s lawyer, R. Sivaraj, said that as of Sunday (July 17) morning, about RM15,000 had been collected.

“We expect it to hit the RM20,000 target for her bail by the end of the day,” he said.

Sivaraj said donors from around the world had reached out to his team, expressing interest in donating for Siti Nuramira’s legal case.

He told news portal FMT that the bail was expected to be posted on Monday (July 18) at 9am, adding that once the case was completed and the bail money released by the court, the crowdfunded money would be refunded to its donors.

On Wednesday (July 13), Nuramira pleaded not guilty to a charge of insulting Islam by admitting she was Muslim and had memorised 15 juz of the Quran before discarding her tudung and baju kurung at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on June 4.

Nuramira was charged under Section 298A of the Penal Code with causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, or prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on grounds of religion.

She is facing a maximum of five years in prison upon conviction.
