Comedy club owner to be released on bail July 15, say police

KUALA LUMPUR: The 39-year-old Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder will be released on police bail Friday (July 15) evening, say the police.

Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said the suspect would be released on bail as the part of the investigation that required his presence had concluded.

"We obtained a one-day remand order on the suspect and he will be released on police bail Friday evening," she said in a statement on Friday (July 15).

The suspect's lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, said police obtained a one-day remand order for his client.

"The police initially applied for a four-day remand order but we objected to that. The magistrate agreed and allowed a one-day remand order.

"He will be released from the Dang Wangi police headquarters by Friday evening," he said when contacted.

Ramkarpal said his client was being investigated over three videos that allegedly touched on racial and religious sensitivities.

"My client has and will continue to give full cooperation to the police.

"We will wait for the outcome of the investigation," he said.

Police force secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin had said the suspect was arrested on Thursday (July 14).

"Investigations are being carried out under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," she said.

Several police reports were lodged against the suspect following a woman's controversial performance recently at the club.

On Wednesday (July 13), a couple under fire for allegedly pulling off an indecent act at a comedy club’s open mic night and then uploading a video of it on social media was charged in court.

Siti Nuramira Abdullah, 26, and her boyfriend V. Alexander Navin, 38, pleaded not guilty to three charges in two separate courts.

Siti Nuramira was charged under Section 298A(1)(a) of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will, or prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on the grounds of religion.

At the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court, Navin was slapped with two charges for making and sharing an offensive posting on his Instagram account on June 5 and on his YouTube account on June 16.

Both charges were filed under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
