KUALA LUMPUR: An exception to the ban on micromobility vehicles on roads is made for persons with disabilities (PWD) who may still use electric or manual personal mobility aids (PMA).
PWDs with electric or manual PMAs may still use these aids to cross roads, MCA spokesman Mike Chong said on Tuesday (May 10).
He told a press conference here that certain parties were twisting the facts to say that the government was oppressing the people, especially the disadvantaged, with a blanket ban on the use of such devices.
“The Transport Ministry has already issued clear guidelines on the usage and restriction towards specific micromobility vehicles for the safety of their users and other road users.
“The main concern previously was on the use of PMAs by the disabled to commute (but) this had already been discussed among relevant stakeholders and NGOs," he said.
Chong added that those who owned micromobility vehicles that were prohibited from being used on roads could still use them in locations approved by local authorities.
“These locations are determined by local councils and the Housing and Local Government Ministry under guidelines that will be released soon,” he said.
On April 26, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the use of certain micromobility vehicles on roads was prohibited with immediate effect.
He said the ban covered mopeds, personal mobility devices including escooters, devices with internal combustion engines or those propelled by human power.
