PETALING JAYA: There is an event known as “Singles’ Day”, which is marked each year on 11/11”.
And today is “22/2/22”, a palindrome date which has given rise to the term “Twosday” as it also happens to fall on a Tuesday.
But it’s also “Single Tasking Day” today. Confused? Read on.
“Single Tasking Day” is a made-up holiday that is celebrated annually on Feb 22.
It is meant to motivate and dedicate oneself to performing only a single task, at any given time.
The call came about because of modern-day technology distractions that people have become accustomed to like using their phones while driving, posting content on social media while watching TV, or checking emails while baby- sitting.
“Multitasking caused me to spend a much longer time on my original task because I was easily sidetracked by others things that I had to do.
“Also, trying to focus on multiple things at once really messed with my focus and because of that, I made a lot of mistakes and sometimes overlooked some important things,” said Kujeyna Mei Houng, 35
So to mark “Single Tasking Day” today, the freelance designer plans to turn off her social media notifications to avoid distractions.
Kujeyna said it was important to focus on one task at a time in her line of work because she has to meet her clients’ expectations in terms of quality and deadlines.
“It’s focused and you won’t overwhelm yourself.
“It helps me get things done more consistently and ensures the quality of my work. This is because I am giving that specific objective all my attention,” she added.
Recent studies have suggested that multitasking may not be as effective and productive as previously thought.
It is also found that multitasking can also decrease the accuracy of certain tasks.
Productivity experts suggest that the best way to accomplish something well is to devote all your energy and time to the task at hand.
For baker Suzyana Ong, single-tasking is important because baking is all about getting the right measurements and ingredients.
“If someone tries to talk to me while I’m baking, I just tell them to wait first.
“Baking should be done as a single task in my opinion. Imagine that you are multitasking and you accidentally mix sugar with salt or you wonder if you had put one teaspoon or one tablespoon.
”Single-tasking has helped me avoid these mistakes,” said the 30-year-old.
To celebrate this day, Ong will be taking a break from baking and going out for a movie instead.
But for public relations content writer Rohit Shaun Kirby, it would just be like any other day.
“Nonetheless, it’s a good day to let people know there are other ways of conducting their work,” said the 23-year-old.
Kirby discourages multi-tasking because of his past experience that was stressful. Besides that, he was unable to produce high-quality work.
“As I need to write a variety of articles, focusing on different matters at the same time divides my thought process, so there is insufficient time to ponder and elaborate each topic,” he said.
