Let the people decide if PAS and Perikatan are still relevant, says Tok Mat

SEREMBAN: Umno's revival is purely due to the support of the Malays and has nothing to do with PAS, says its deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic).

He said more Malays were also back supporting the party due to the poor performances of the Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional governments.

"You can call Umno a duck, a goose, a tiger and so on but you must accept the fact that it is still the largest Malay party and also the largest political party in Malaysia.

"We rose again not because of PAS but because of the Malay support for Umno and due to the poor performance of the Pakatan and Perikatan governments," he said in a statement.

Yesterday (Jan 28), PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had accused certain Umno leaders of being ungrateful.

Abdul Hadi said it was PAS who had "saved" Umno following its defeat in the last general election but some of the party leaders have since forgotten this.

He went on to describe Umno as a duck then which broke its leg and that it was PAS which had stood by it.

However, Hadi said despite PAS' noble gesture, Umno, which has since "healed", has now chosen to abandon the party and "swim" on its own again.

Mohamad said Pas should remember that without Umno, it would not have been part of the Federal government today.

He said PAS also knew that without Umno, it would not be able to remain part of the federal government after the next general election.

"So, if PAS feels that Barisan Nasional is no longer relevant, we shall return to the people to decide.

"And let the people also decide if PAS and Perikatan are still relevant," he said.

Separately, Mohamad said the Johor state election was being held not because of a certain cluster in Umno but due to various strategic reasons.

He said Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad had his own reasons to seek a new mandate and no party should question this.

"He was given the full backing by the party to advise the Sultan of Johor the circumstances and the need to dissolve the state assembly.

"The state election is not being called due to the influence of any cluster in Umno," he said adding that such claims could only come from Umno's enemies.

Mohamad said Umno was a democratic party and was not dominated by any individual or group.

"When Umno decided to withdraw support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (as Prime Minister), only 12 Umno MPs complied.

"That is how democratic Umno is," he added.
