Amanah Youth to offer aid to teen who was ‘bathed like a corpse’ for attempted theft

PETALING JAYA: Amanah Youth has offered to help the teenager who attempted to steal money from a mosque to buy medication for his sick grandfather.

Its chief Hasbie Muda said in a Facebook post that they wanted to help Daniel Iskandar, 19, by giving him a second chance in life.

He said they would also extend their help to buy medication for his grandfather.

Earlier, he said the wing would pay the fine imposed by the court but found that a donor had paid it off.

On Thursday (Jan 13), the Selayang Magistrate’s Court sentenced Daniel to 10 days’ imprisonment and fined RM4,000 or five months’ jail, after he admitted that he attempted to steal money from the donation box of Masjid Al Islahiah, Kuang, Rawang, on Jan 8.

“The aid can be used to help the family as well as to help Daniel (if he was indeed involved in drugs), depending on our discussion with them.

“I think the action by the mosque committee of ‘bathing him like corpse’ and subsequently spreading the video were excessive.”

However, I hope people do not attack the committee at the same time.

“I do believe their intentions were good, which was to teach the boy a lesson but the method was unsuitable.

“The real perpetrator here is the person who recorded the video and made it viral. This action of obstructing the modesty is forbidden in Islam and has great repercussions,” he said in his post.

He added that one should avoid cyberbullying, as it can cause emotional stress for the people in the video.

On Monday (Jan 10), a viral video of a youth being “bathed like a corpse” by a few mosque committee members for trying to steal from a donation box was circulated on social media.

The act had received support from some quarters while others felt that it was unsuitable for the teen to be treated in such a way.

Defence counsel Azman Abdullah had yesterday asked the court to impose a lenient sentence.

He said the circulation of the video on social media was not appropriate, as it had caused him to become depressed.
