It remains one of the most stunning moments in Oscar history when Marlon Brando declined the Best Actor award in 1973 for his spell-binding role in The Godfather.

Instead, he sent a Native American actress to represent him on stage. His message?

He was against the stereotypical depiction of Indigenous people by Hollywood.
