Anything can happen in football so do your best, Ahmad Faizal tells national squad ahead of AFF Suzuki Cup

IPOH: The Malaysian football squad has been advised to take heed of the recent Malaysia Cup final and to do its best in the 2021 AFF Suzuki Cup.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said anything was possible in football.

"Just take a look at the recent Malaysia Cup (final) match.

"Everyone thought JDT would beat KL City but things turned out differently," he told reporters after launching the national-level Volunteers' Day here on Sunday (Dec 5).

"The players are ready and will need to try their best. The football is round, so anything can happen," he added.

The tournament will be held in Singapore from Sunday to Jan 1.

Malaysia, who last won the trophy in 2010 and came close to winning it again in 2018, is in the same group as defending champions Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos.

Ahmad Faizal also congratulated the Malaysian squash team for winning the Asian Team Squash Championship on Saturday (Dec 4).

"We are proud of both the men and women’s teams for their success.

“They will be joining several other championships in the future and are hopeful to keep their (winning) momentum going," he said.

During the championship held at Bukit Jalil, the women's team, led by newly crowned Malaysian Open champion Aifa Azman, overcame defending champions Hong Kong 2-1 while the men's team also won 2-1 against India.

Malaysia have not won the double at the Asian team meet since 2008.
