PUTRAJAYA: The National Maritime Port City and Carey Islands Port Special Economic Zone (CIPSEZ) have been approved in principle by the government.

Both projects are expected to contribute up to RM4.7bil to the country’s gross domestic product by 2045, says Nga Kor Ming (pic).

The Housing and Local Government Minister said the National Physical Planning Council, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, approved developments in principle..

“Carey Islands has the potential to strengthen Selangor and Malaysia’s position as a regional maritime hub and create up to 115,000 job opportunities for the people,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 17).

Nga, who is also the minister in charge of the council, said the planned development includes a 1,011ha port area, which is expected to increase port handling capacity by 42 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for containers and 38 million tonnes of conventional cargo.

“Port Klang is now among the world’s 10 busiest container ports, according to Lloyd’s List One Hundred Ports 2026.

“With the development of the third terminal on Carey Islands, the government aims to further increase the capacity, efficiency and competitiveness of our ports,” he said.

The development area is accessible via the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Jalan Pulau Carey, Persiaran Pulau Lumut, Pulau Indah Expressway and Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS), he said.

He also urged the Selangor government and local authorities, particularly the Kuala Langat Municipal Council, to incorporate the relevant land-use zones for the development into the Kuala Langat Local Plan 2030.
