MELAKA: Durian Tunggal constituents have surprised Perikatan Nasional candidate Ja'afar Othman with some of their requests – including not to be snobbish (lagak) if elected.
The Perikatan candidate from PAS is contesting for the first time in the constituency with 13,312 voters.
"They want to see a friendly and approachable assemblyman for their constituency this time around.
"They also want me to resolve the flood woes and the infamous traffic congestion in Durian Tunggal," said the chemist-turned-businessman here on Sunday (Nov 14).
Ja'afar, 45, said he heard much of the same wherever he went.
"I can feel their frustration and hope the candidate who wins, will never neglect the Durian Tunggal voters or become aloof," he said.
Ja'afar, a father of four, said he had been moving extensively within the constituency.
"However, I am moving in a small group because of the standard operating procedure set for the polls," he said.
He said he was aware of the constituency's demographic as he grew up in Durian Tunggal
"I am a true-blue Durian Tunggal boy and most of the locals know me," he said.
Ja'afar will face incumbent Datuk Mohd Sofi Abdul Wahab (Pakatan Harapan), Zahari Abd Kalil (Barisan Nasional) and Mohd Erfan Mahrilar (independent) in a four-cornered battle.
Apart from Durian Tunggal, PAS has also fielded candidates in Kuala Linggi, Taboh Naning, Klebang, Bukit Katil, Duyong, Serkam and Merlimau.
