Adly is Pakatan’s choice for CM as polls loom

MELAKA: Adly Zahari (pic) is Pakatan Harapan’s choice as chief minister should the alliance manage to wrest the state at the upcoming state election.

Pakatan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim named Adly at a press conference here yesterday that was also attended by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu.

There was no mention of former chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron, who is contesting the Asahan seat under the Pakatan banner.

At the press conference, Anwar, also the PKR president, took swipes at politicians who “use their power to profit from people”, and called on voters to reject these candidates.

“The choice is in the hands of Melaka voters to either maintain a rotten system or (elect) a government based on ethical principles,” he said.

He added that Pakatan was united by its decision to have Adly as chief minister.

Earlier, Lim said Pakatan was united and only had a single list of candidates for the Melaka election, compared to its rivals.

That one list includes Idris and Datuk Nor Azman Hassan, who has been placed as a candidate for Pantai Kundor.

Idris and Nor Azman, as well as former Telok Mas assemblyman Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad and former Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Datuk Norhizam Baktee, withdrew their support for the Barisan Nasional/Perikatan Nasional-led state government on Oct 4, triggering the collapse that led to this state election being called.

Adly said Pakatan will confer the status of executive councillor on the next state Opposition leader if it manages to administer the state after the election.

Adly said the action plan, which is considered Pakatan’s election manifesto, is based on three core points, six strategies and 32 initiatives which focus on the economy, good governance, as well as health and well-being.

Pakatan promised to enact an anti-party hopping enactment, as well as fair distribution of allocations to all the 28 assemblymen, regardless of political affiliation, although there was no mention whether the same allocation would be extended to Independent candidates if they manage to secure any of the 22 seats they are contesting in.

Adly also said there will be two funds to care for those who are physically and mentally impacted by Covid-19, while it will also be mandatory for all lawmakers to declare their assets, while open tenders will also be the norm for public procurement.

For the economic sector, Pakatan will focus on creating 10,000 jobs as well as give a special allocation to boost the tourism industry recovery, apart from emphasising assistance for small and medium enterprises.Adly said they will also create a micro-credit scheme with an easy approval of up RM5,000, while locals will also be offered a scheme to own affordable houses.
