Police take statements from 11 #Lawan organisers

KUALA LUMPUR: Eleven individuals, believed to be the organisers of Saturday's (July 31) Keluar dan #Lawan protest, have had their statements recorded at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

The individuals arrived at the police headquarters at about 9.30am on Monday (Aug 2), accompanied by lawyers.

Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat spokesman Mohammad Asraf Sharafi said the group started having their statements recorded at 10.30am, and the process lasted two hours.

"The police informed us that investigations were based on violation of Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

"We adhered to SOP during the protest by providing face masks, gloves and face shields," he told reporters after giving his statement.

The protest was also monitored by Suhakam, which verified that the protesters complied with SOP, he added.

Asked if there will be another protest in the near future, Mohammad Asraf said he did not rule out the possibility.

It was reported that a police report was lodged against the protest on Saturday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said they received the report at 3.04pm on Saturday.

"Investigations will be opened and all individuals involved have already been identified.

"They will be called up to have their statements taken by the Dang Wangi police soon," he had said in a statement on Saturday.

He said if police had enough evidence, those individuals would be issued compound notices for offences under Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act(Act 342) and Rule 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations.

"The protest began at around 10.30am on Saturday and lasted about two hours.

"We advise the public to comply with SOPs under the National Recovery Plan and refrain from involvement in any assembly, taking into consideration the Covid-19 pandemic that has affected the country," he said.

It was reported that police were expected to take statements from five Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat members on Sunday (Aug 1) over their roles as organisers of the protest.

In a statement on Saturday, Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat said the five were called to have their statements taken at the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 10am on Sunday.

"The five are Mohamad Al Shatri Abdullah, Mohammad Asraf Sharafi Mohammad Azhar, Tharmelinggem Pillai, Qyira Yusri dan Sevan Doraisamy," it said.
