PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun says he will recuse himself from any motions which involve the Attorney General as Tan Sri Idrus Harun is his brother.

In a statement Saturday (July 31), Azhar said that any motions which involve or are related to Idrus will be handled by Deputy Speakers Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon and Datuk Seri Azalina Othman.

He issued the statement after receiving a motion from Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran, dated July 29.

Kulasegaran had asked for action to be taken against Idrus and law minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan over Istana Negara’s recent statement that the decision to revoke the Emergency Ordinances was inaccurate and had confused members of the House.

“My office received a motion on July 29 from YB Ipoh Barat.

“The motion has matters which are related to Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun. It is public knowledge that Idrus is my elder brother.

“In line with that, I have decided to recuse myself from any decisions related to that motion.

“Whatever decisions related to the motion will be made by Deputy Speakers according to their seniority, firstly Mohd Rashid and secondly, Azalina.

“I will not interfere in any way in the execution of the duties of the Deputy Speakers on the matter,” said Azhar.

In the past week, there has been much discussion in the Dewan Rakyat special sitting on the issue after it was announced by Takiyuddin that the Cabinet had decided on July 21 to revoke the Emergency Ordinances.
