Shopee and Lazada: Online purchasing agent job offer is a scam

PETALING JAYA: Two e-commerce companies have warned the public against falling for jobs such as “online purchasing agents” being offered through messaging platforms.

Shopee said it had been informed by the police of an ongoing scam where individuals were impersonating Shopee employees offering jobs in the company via messaging platforms such as WhatsApp.

“We do not employ any individuals to recruit employees through messaging platforms. There is no such role as ‘online purchasing agents’ in the organisation.

“We wish to remind Malaysians to be vigilant and aware of these scams, and not to fall prey to these fake employment offers,” it said in a statement.

Lazada said it was appalling that anyone would prey on and scam those trying to find work during a situation when so many people had lost their jobs and were anxious for work.

“We do not employ anyone who recruits employees through messaging platforms, and can confirm that there is no such role as ‘online purchasing agents’ at Lazada.

“We will continue to work with PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) to assist in any way possible on this matter,” the company said in a statement.

In their statements, both Shopee and Lazada called on the public to file a police report immediately if they were approached or offered questionable job opportunities.
