Construction site slapped with notice due to unsavoury living conditions for workers

KUALA LUMPUR: Police here have issued a notice to the management of a construction site for a luxury condominium in the city due to unsavoury living conditions for its workers.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the notice was issued for the management to clean up their workers' accommodation, as it did not adhere to the Workers' Housing, Accommodation and Facilities Minimum Standard Act 1990.

"The living conditions for the workers did not meet the standards required.

"Overall, we were not satisfied with the accommodations, toilet facilities, dirty eating areas and even the rooms were not suitable for the workers," he told reporters after inspecting the construction site on Saturday (June 19).

ACP Mohamad Zainal said the police also has the authority to ensure that all individuals at the construction site complied with Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP).

"We have advised the management to improve all facilities for the workers, as we are worried that such unsavoury conditions will cause the spread of Covid-19.

"Most Covid-19 positive cases at construction sites are caused by failure to adhere to the SOP and set guidelines," he added.

ACP Mohamad Zainal said the KL Labour Department also took necessary action on the management of the construction site.

Meanwhile, KL Labour Department senior assistant director Mohd Faisal Fariz Baharudin said the notice issued was an order for the management to improve the facilities within two weeks.

"We will conduct another inspection and issue instructions for the employer to transfer the workers to better living conditions if they failed to act," he said.
