Ministers and their deputies to forgo salaries

PETALING JAYA: All ministers and deputy ministers will forgo their salaries for three months starting in June to help fund the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Prime Minister said their salaries would be channelled to the government’s National Disaster Relief Trust fund for Covid-19-related expenditures.

Muhyiddin added that imposing the 14-day lockdown was a hard decision for him to make, but bringing down Covid-19 figures would depend on whether Malaysians were disciplined.

“The government has closed nearly all economic and social sectors to reduce movement and to break the chain of infection, ” he said in a special televised address to the nation yesterday.

He advised people to stay at home and always abide by the standard operating procedure to curb Covid-19 infections.

“If you fail to abide by this rule, then we will all fail, ” he added.

Muhyiddin also told frontliners to remain resilient, saying that their sacrifices had always been appreciated by the government.

“I know you are all tired in the war against this virus. Once again, I reiterate the government’s unwavering appreciation for the sacrifices of our frontliners across the country, ” he said.

Muhyiddin also prayed for the recovery of Malaysians currently battling Covid-19, and expressed his condolences to the families of those who have fallen to the disease.
