PETALING JAYA: Almost half of the 50 Covid-19 deaths on Friday (May 21) occurred in Selangor, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic).
“A total of 50 deaths were recorded today (May 21) with 22 cases in Selangor, eight in Sarawak, five in Johor, four in Kedah, three in Kuala Lumpur.
“Two deaths were reported in Negri Sembilan, Perak and Melaka respectively while Penang and Kelantan recorded one death each, ” he said in a statement on Friday, adding that the death toll is now at 2,149.
The highest number of daily Covid-19 deaths was recorded on Thursday (May 20) with 59 fatalities.
Dr Noor Hisham said 363 out of the 643 Covid-19 patients under intensive care required ventilator assistance.
The number of Covid-19 patients in the ICU has doubled since the middle of April and hit a record high of 337 on May 1.
Earlier on Friday, Dr Noor Hisham, in a Facebook post said some 83% of ICU beds for Covid-19 patients nationwide have been taken up.
He shared a graph showing that Covid-19 ICU bed occupancy had risen from less than 200 in March to now close to 900 beds.
