GEORGE TOWN: The breaking of fast at several popular Indian-Muslim joints here are being carried out in an orderly manner, with many customers heading home soon after to prepare for their terawih prayers.
Rela members could be seen stationed at some outlets to prevent overcrowding, while policemen and Penang Island City Council officers would conduct spot checks to ensure standard operating procedure compliance.
Most of those queuing up for takeaways also maintained physical distancing.
Some customers even had to wait outside a restaurant here when it reached its maximum capacity.
Engineer Johari Sulaiman, 33, decided on takeaway as he felt it was safer to break his fast with his family at home.
“My parents are in their 70s and they fall under the high-risk group.
“Since my wife has just given birth to our second child, I feel it is better for all of them to stay home.
“It’s better for me to come out alone and buy food for the family.
“I want my family to stay safe, ” he said.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said his men had stepped up their patrols to prevent the public from lingering at public spaces.
“We are conducting spot checks at eateries and public areas to make sure the people do not loiter in these places.
“We have also deployed policemen to the popular restaurants where people throng to buka puasa.
“The situation is well under control and we will continue to monitor from time to time, ” he said when contacted yesterday.
