KUCHING: Some 99 students of a secondary school in Ulu Balingian, Selangau, have tested positive for Covid-19 in a new outbreak detected on Saturday (April 17), says Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the index case of the Ulu Balingian cluster was a 16-year-old student who was confirmed positive on April 16 after undergoing screening for symptomatic individuals at the Selangau health clinic on April 13.

"Following active case detection among the index case's family and students and staff at the school, the cluster has 101 confirmed cases so far, comprising 99 students and two other contacts," he said at the state disaster management committee's briefing here on Saturday.

Uggah said another new cluster involving a religious primary school was detected in Sibu with 20 confirmed cases so far.

The index case of the Jalan Disa cluster is a 28-year-old teacher at the school who tested positive on April 14.

She had travelled to Kabong district during the March 31-April 4 school holidays and started experiencing symptoms on April 9.

"A total of 199 individuals have been screened, with 179 testing negative. Contact tracing is also being conducted in Kabong to curb the spread of this cluster," Uggah said.

He also said a workplace cluster, dubbed the Jalan Ding Lik Kwong cluster, was identified in Sibu involving a timber company.

To date, the cluster has 16 confirmed cases including the index case, a 28-year-old woman working at the company who tested positive on April 13.

Sarawak reported 512 new cases and one death on Saturday, taking the state's tally to 23,432 cases with 136 fatalities.

Of the new cases, 254 are close contacts of Covid-19 patients and 167 detected from the screening of active clusters.

Meanwhile, state health director Dr Chin Zin Hing said 924 people were expected to receive the Covid-19 jab at the Sibu Indoor Stadium on April 19 when the second phase of the vaccination programme gets underway.

He said the second phase would kick off in Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit, Mukah and Miri on April 23, followed by Samarahan, Bintulu and Limbang on April 24 and Sarikei on April 30.

"The second phase is for high-risk individuals with comorbidities and senior citizens above 60 years. We are targeting 929,435 people to be vaccinated in this phase," he said.
