SHAH ALAM: The police did not obtain a remand order on the founder of Sugarbook, the sugar daddy dating platform.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani (pic) said, however, that police would investigate the matter further.
"We were not granted a remand order on the suspect," he told reporters after visiting the Setia Alam movement control order roadblock on Thursday (Feb 18).
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Fadzil Ahmat had said the police were expected to bring the 34-year-old man to the Shah Alam Court at 10am on Thusrday (Feb 18) to obtain a remand order on him.
"To date, we have received 74 police reports nationwide in connection with this case," he said when contacted on Thursday.
The founder of the dating platform was arrested at a condominium in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday (Feb 17).
During initial investigation, the suspect confessed to being the founder of Sugarbook.
On Monday (Feb 15), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) blocked access to the Sugarbook website for allegedly breaching the law on the use of network facilities or services.
However, it was learned that the Sugarbook developer then set up an alternative site to enable its users to access the blocked webpage.
Sugarbook matches “sugar daddies” to “sugar babies”, or older and generally more well-off men to young women in a largely financial arrangement.
MCMC had said it was monitoring and investigating Sugarbook and would take action against its users and platform owners should they violate the laws.
