KOTA KINABALU: A tradesman was detained by the Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here on Tuesday (Jan 19) for attempting to bribe the department head of a government agency.
The suspect had offered the complainant RM2,000 on Jan 15 to expedite the approval process for fuel sale to fishermen at Batu Putih jetty in Sandakan district.
According to a report, the suspect, who is a 50-year-old man, was detained at MACC office in Kota Kinabalu after the department head lodged a report with the commission on the incident.
Sabah MACC director S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the suspect is being held for 24 hours for further investigations.
He also praised the department head for reporting corruption practices to MACC, in line with Section 25 of MACC Act 2009 (duty to report bribes).
Karunanithy urged civil servants in the state to come forward and report any attempts of bribery or corruption while on duty.
