GEORGE TOWN: Police here have seized over RM8.14mil worth of drugs and arrested six people in several raids on Thursday (Nov 19).

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan said the six arrested by the state Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) includes the mastermind of the syndicate, his wife and his mother in raids on premises in Sungai Nibong, Bayan Lepas and Balik Pulau.

“We successfully arrested four men including the 35-year-old mastermind who is jobless and two women including the mastermind's 28-year-old wife from Thailand,” he said during a press conference at the police contingent headquarters on Friday (Nov 20).

Comm Sahabudin said that the six suspects arrested are all aged between 28 and 59, adding that this drug bust is believed to be the largest in Penang this year.

“The police confiscated 133.3kg of methamphetamine worth RM5.97mil, 20.7kg ketamine worth around RM1.14mil and 11.1kg of heroin worth RM1.03mil,” he said.

It is believed that the drugs were transported into the country by land through the Sintok border.

He said the police also confiscated three vehicles worth RM36,300 and cash worth RM2,100 under the Dangerous Drugs Act (Forfeiture of Property) 1988.

Comm Sahabudin said that the drugs seized during the raids could be used by more than one million drug addicts, adding that the police believed the syndicate began operations early this year.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction,” added Comm Sahabudin.

He said that all suspects have been remanded from Thursday to Nov 25 to assist in the investigation, adding that two of the suspects – aged 38 and 39 – have a criminal record.

Comm Sahabudin said that three of the six suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.

On the raids, he said that police personnel arrested two men in Sungai Nibong and seized the drugs found in their car.

Comm Sahabudin added that the police then detained a man at a drug store in Sungai Nibong before arresting two more suspects at a terrace house in Bayan Lepas and finally, the mastermind's mother and wife at a house in Balik Pulau.
