PETALING JAYA: A motorcycle thief that was stopped by the owner of the vehicle showed Covid-19 symptoms and confessed to being a close contact to a patient under investigation (PUI), says Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Zairulnizam Mohd Zainuddin.

"On Oct 17, the complainant, who is an auxiliary policeman at the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), had just finished his duties there and was heading towards his motorcycle, when he spotted two men trying to steal his vehicle.

"The complainant called for backup, and both suspects were arrested. Checks on the suspects led to several seizures, including equipment believed to have been used for stealing motorcycles.

"When both suspects were sent for temperature checks, one showed a temperature reading of 38.5°C. He has been detained at a ward because he showed cough and fever symptoms. He also confessed that he is a close contact of a PUI that is currently under home quarantine," said Zairulnizam on Sunday (Oct 18).

A Covid-19 test was performed on the suspect and the result is still pending.

The other suspect was sent for treatment after suffering an injury on his lips during a struggle while being arrested.

"Both suspects, aged 26 and 19, have previous records for drug related offences," he said.
