Public transport allowed to operate in conditional MCO areas but must follow strict SOPs, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: All land, air and sea public transportation services in areas placed under the conditional movement control order (MCO) will be allowed to operate as usual provided they strictly comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the authorities, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

The Transport Minister said that the National Security Council (NSC) had, in a meeting on Tuesday (Oct 13), finalised the relevant SOPs for public transport services in areas placed under the conditional MCO.

“All land (including buses, city buses, taxi and e-hailing services), air and sea (except for cruise ships/ holiday cruise ships) public transportation services are allowed to operate as usual provided they strictly comply with the SOPs set by the NSC.

“Public transport users who need to travel inter-district or interstate are advised to obtain police permission or a letter from their employers before embarking on their journey.

“This is to ensure that public transport users travel inter-district or interstate only for essential purposes, including for emergencies and other reasons allowed in the SOPs, ” Dr Wee said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 13).

He said those who wish to travel from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to other states are advised to get permission from the nearest police station before their journeys, including air travellers via KLIA, KLIA2 and the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport.

Dr Wee also urged the public to always practise good personal hygiene by frequently washing their hands with soap and water or using hand sanitiser.

“Always remember to wear face masks and practise physical distancing whenever possible when travelling on public transport or using the stations and terminals. The battle against Covid-19 is our shared responsibility, ” he said.
