PETALING JAYA: There is a need to call for snap polls to return the mandate given by the rakyat for political and economic stability, suggests Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
The Umno secretary-general said it was important for the government to have a strong mandate with the support of more than 130 MPs to administer the country.
"The 113:109 Parliament seats are not stable. The way out? Return to the people and hold snap polls," he said in a Twitter post Thursday (Sept 24).
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had held a press conference on Wednesday (Sept 23), claiming that he had the majority support of MPs to form the next Federal Government.
He claimed that he has a "strong, formidable majority" to form a new government.
Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also said on Wednesday that he received information that many Umno and Barisan Nasional MPs have voiced support for Anwar.
On concerns about holding snap polls during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ahmad Maslan said that a strict standard operating procedure could be imposed similar to what was done in South Korea and Singapore, which held their national polls recently.
