Former Terengganu MB Wan Mokthar Ahmad, 88, dies of heart complications

PETALING JAYA: Former Terengganu Mentri Besar Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar Ahmad (pic) has died of heart complications at the age of 88.

He passed away at 6.20am on Monday (Sept 21) at the Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, said his son Wan Abdul Hakim in a Facebook post.

Wan Abdul Hakim added that funeral prayers for his father would be held at the Bukit Jelutong Mosque here in Selangor after the zohor prayers today and said that his remains would be buried at the Section 21 Muslim Cemetery on Shah Alam.

Wan Mokhtar was the Terengganu Mentri Besar for 25 years from 1974 to 1999, and was the state's longest-serving mentri besar while holding the Cukai state assembly seat.

He lost his seat in the 1999 general elections when PAS won a landslide victory in Terengganu to form the state government.

The Umno stalwart was elected Umno vice-president in 1987 alongside Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Besides politics, Wan Mokhtar was also the Terengganu Football Association president for over 20 years.
