Voters turned away for wearing shorts

TANJUNG MALIM: About 10 voters were turned away from the polling centre at SK Aminuddin Baki during the Slim state by-election for wearing shorts.

Angered by the incident, some voters tore up their voters’ card.

According to a polling agent, who only wished to be known as Wee, they had to persuade the voters to return.

“There were at least 10 early voters who came in shorts.

“There were some who returned wearing long trousers, ” he said.

A voter who wished to be known as Young said this was the first time he was turned away because of his dress code.

“I have not missed any elections and have voted here for at least nine times. If this is the case, I might not come and vote again, ” he said in anger.

On the incident, Election Commission chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said it was a misunderstanding.

“Only those wearing party logos were barred, so it should not be an issue in the first place, ” he told reporters at the school.
