TANJUNG MALIM: Acting Tanjung Malim Umno division chief Mohd Zaidi Aziz will stand in the Slim state by-election.
The 43-year-old is set to contest against a candidate from Pejuang, the new party set up by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Zaidi said he would not take the by-election lightly.
“We will do our best in this election and continue the fight of Datuk Khusairi Abdul Talib, ” he said after the announcement by Perak Umno chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad at Felda Residence Trolak, near here, yesterday.
Nomination for the by-election is on Saturday while polling will be on Aug 29.
The state seat fell vacant after Khusairi, 59, a four-term incumbent, died of a heart attack on July 15. In the 14th general election, Khusairi won with a 2,183-vote majority against PAS’ Zulfadhli Zainal and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Mohd Amran Ibrahim, who contested under the PKR flag.
Saarani said the party believed that Zaidi ticked all the boxes as a winnable candidate.
“Initially, we had nine names before shortlisting it to five and finally to one.
“All the candidates have potential but in the end, the party’s supreme council chose Zaidi, ” he said.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, who was present, said Zaidi was a deserving candidate.
“Being Khusairi’s right-hand man, Zaidi gained much experience working under him.
“Zaidi is also known by many, ” he added.
Also present at the ceremony were MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.
