PEKAN: The Opposition did not field a candidate in the Chini by-election because it knows it cannot win, says Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He said Covid-19 was just a convenient excuse for not contesting after the Opposition clearly saw that it could not wrest Chini from Barisan Nasional.
However, the Rantau assemblyman claimed that there were still Pakatan Harapan proxies being deployed in the by-election.
“We already know about Pakatan. They will not contest and yet they are placing their proxies here.
“We can see and smell those candidates, said to be Independent, who are being supported by the machinery of parties that did not want to contest, ” he said at a ceramah in Paloh Hinai here on Friday night.
Pakatan is skipping the by-election, citing the safety aspects arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Chini by-election became a three-way battle between Barisan’s Mohd Sharim Md Zain, 41, Independent Tengku Datuk Zainul Hisham Tengku Hussin, 64, and another Independent Mohd Shukri Mohd Ramli, 49.
Although Tengku Zainul recently received an endorsement from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the former Pekan Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy chief said he had never met the former prime minister.
Shukri, on the other hand, had denied being sponsored by PKR.
Pahang PKR had also denied that Shukri was the party’s proxy, saying the blogger had even contested as an Independent against PKR in the 13th General Election in the Semambu state seat.
During the ceramah, Mohamad called on voters to come out in droves to cast their ballots for Barisan on July 4.
“Show the whole of Malaysia that everyone here is together with the voters in Kimanis, Tanjung Piai, Rantau, Semenyih and Cameron Highlands.
“Show that we can no longer accept the lies of the Pakatan government and that they have to be defeated in the coming 15th General Election, ” he said.
