Cafe in Bangsar finds an innovative way to mitigate MCO

Urban Daybreak co-founder Jeremy Teoh, who regularly made chicken rice for his family and friends, thought: ‘Why not?'

CAFE operators are finding innovative ways to stay in business, especially during this challenging movement control order (MCO) period.

Urban Daybreak, a trendy eatery nestled in the heart of Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, has now added chicken rice delivery to its offerings.

Urban Daybreak welcomed its Klang Valley customers last year, following the success of its initial outlet in George Town. Not long after celebrating its first anniversary, the pandemic hit and the MCO was implemented, impacting many cafes and restaurants.

To mitigate the loss in revenue and to ensure that their workers get paid, the bosses of Urban Daybreak who already stopped drawing their salaries launched a new venture – Jeremy’s Chicks, a chicken rice delivery service.

Urban Daybreak co-founder Jeremy Teoh who used to make chicken rice for his family and friends came up with the idea of serving this Malaysian favourite.

With the food priced at between RM9 and RM10 per serving, Jeremy’s Chicks has been making waves on social media.

“Chicken rice being a comfort food for Malaysians, we decided to create a new brand at a reasonable price. It is of utmost importance that the management can sustain the business in order to pay full salary to the staff.

“At the same time, we would like to offer something affordable and convenient to the community during this tough time,” Teoh shared.

Noted for its fried chicken waffle served at Urban Daybreak, the team added fried chicken to the Jeremy’s Chicks menu.

Urban Daybreak is known as an ‘all-day brunch spot’.

Urban Daybreak finance manager Adran Oo conceded that sales have dropped dramatically in the past month.

However, Teoh shared that the management has maintained full salary for its staff.

“I have the responsibility to ensure that our staff members are well taken care of. They have bills and loans to pay, and families with kids to take care of. Taking care of each other like family is the key,” he emphasised.

Mandee Yeap, who has been with Urban Daybreak since the very beginning, is looking forward to seeing their customers again. “I miss my regular customers and how things were,” she said.

Apart from Jeremy’s Chicks being available for pre-order on App’etite, Urban Daybreak (KL and Penang)’s all-day-breakfast menu is available on GrabFood.
