11 sentenced to a month's jail, fined RM1k for MCO violation


SEREMBAN: Eleven men were sentenced to serve one month in jail and fined RM1,000 each for violating the movement control order (MCO) here.

R. Suppiah, 57; T. Balashangar, 47; R. Sivaprasad, 41; R. Ghajentiran, 40; and A. Esu Dass, 39, pleaded guilty before magistrate Nor Zaliza Tesnim.

They were charged on Tuesday (March 31) with committing the offence at 1pm on March 27 at Taman Tuanku Ampuan Najihah here under rule 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.

Offenders can be fined up to RM1,000 or jailed not more than six months, or both upon conviction.

Meanwhile C. Devanathan, 37; S. Paramasivam, 36; M. Lawrence and M Deepan, both 34; K. Saravanan, 33; and C. Logeswaran, 26, were also given the same sentence.

They were charged with committing the offence below a flyover on Jalan Bukit Tembok at 4pm on March 28.

All 11 were also ordered to serve an additional three months in jail if they were unable to pay the fine.

The accused were unrepresented, while Nur Atiqah Sapari and Norshazwani Ishak prosecuted.

In related news, Rembau police on their Facebook page said four individuals were sentenced to one month’s jail for the same offence.

The four, aged between 20 and 24, pleaded guilty to the charge before magistrate Tan Chai Wei.

They committed the offence in front of a house in Taman Koperasi in Chembong at 9.15pm on March 27.

The four were unrepresented while Ummi Amyra Natasha Azhar prosecuted. Rembau OCPD DSP Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam in a statement advised the people to always abide by the MCO.

He warned that stern action would be taken against those who breached the rule.
