PETALING JAYA: Women entertainers will no longer be allowed to perform before male audiences during shows in Terengganu once gender segregation guidelines are imposed on event organisers, says a state exco member.
Terengganu Tourism, Culture, and Information Technology committee chairman Ariffin Deraman said the 11-point guideline would be enforced soon after the legal technicalities are ironed out.
“We were supposed to impose it in January but had to put it on hold temporarily,” he added.
In Terengganu, male and female audiences should be segregated and exposing the aurat (parts of the body which should not be exposed) is strictly forbidden.
Only children can participate in “mixed gender” performances on stage.
In 2018, the Terengganu Tourism Department formulated syariah-compliant guidelines for event organisers.
Ariffin denied claims that the new guidelines will cause an adverse effect to tourism promotion campaigns in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020.
“We have done as much as other states to promote tourism,” he stressed.
Just like in Kelantan, Terengganu barred entertainment shows from being held on Thursday nights until after Friday prayers.
Daytime entertainment were not to coincide with prayer times.
“Night performances should only be held after Isyak prayers (night time prayers usually held after 8.30pm), and should be over by midnight,” Ariffin said.
Terengganu also forbids rhythms that could induce voluntary movement of the body.
Extreme and mesmerising lyrics are also not allowed.
