A Bill to repeal the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 (Act 803) has been tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
“The Bill seeks to repeal Act 803 due to the change in the policy of the government that fake news may be dealt with under existing laws, such as the Penal Code, the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, and the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.
“As such, Act 803 is no longer relevant,” read the Bill.
It was tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong to abolish the Act that was passed by the previous Barisan Nasional government.
Previously, attempts by the Pakatan Harapan government to repeal the Act hit a roadblock when it was passed in the Dewan Rakyat but failed to get the nod from the Senate.
The Bill to repeal the Act was tabled as the one-year cooling-off period under Article 68 of the Federal Constitution is now over.
