Senior citizen killed by stray bullet in botched robbery in JB


JOHOR BARU: A robber's stray bullet killed a 78-year-old woman during a botched armed robbery at Kangkar Tebrau here.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said the victim was sitting at the front yard of her house when the incident occurred at 8.57pm on Friday (Sept 13) night.

"Police received a report on a robbery incident where several gunshots were fired along Jalan Tun Fatimah 2.

"The suspects had earlier broken into a house rented by six men, which was a short distance away from the woman's house.

"During the beak-in, the robbers fired two initial shots, hitting one of the tenant's leg," he said in a statement here on Saturday (Sept 14).

Comm Mohd Kamarudin added that the tenants then fought back and chased the robbers when one of them fired two more shots.

He said the fourth shot hit the woman on the right side of her head.

She died while receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.

Comm Mohd Kamarudin also added that the other gunshot victim was being treated at the same hospital.

"The suspects then fled the scene in a Honda EX5 motorcycle stolen from a passerby at gunpoint.

"We have identified the suspects involved in the incident and are currently trying to locate their whereabouts," he said.

He urged those with information to contact the state police hotline at 07-2212999 or lodge a report at the nearest police station.

Comm Mohd Kamarudin said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder as well as Section 3 and 4 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging and exhibiting a firearm in the commission of a scheduled offence.
