Compulsory MP asset declaration: Special motion to be tabled July 1

PETALING JAYA: The special motion to make it compulsory for all MPs to declare their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be tabled next Monday (July 1) when the Parliament convenes.

This was confirmed by a source who said that all preparations have been made to table the special motion to get a majority from MPs of both sides.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong confirmed that he would be the one to table the special motion.

On Thursday (June 27), Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that the government will table a motion in Parliament to compel all MPs to declare their income and assets to the MACC.

“We will table the motion – whether it will be passed or not, that’s a different matter,” said Dr Mahathir.

The proposal to get all MPs, including Opposition MPs, to declare their assets to the MACC was raised at the Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption meeting chaired by Dr Mahathir in May.

This comes after Pakatan Harapan ministers and lawmakers had voluntarily declared their assets to the MACC, with their declarations made public on the commission's website as of Nov 1 last year.

Currently there are no laws to compel lawmakers to declare their assets.
