Chong Wei is our hero forever, says Dr Wee


PETALING JAYA: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has thanked badminton icon Datuk Lee Chong Wei, calling him Malaysia’s hero.

“Thank you Chong Wei, your contributions will continue to be remembered by every Malaysian forever,” he said.

He added that Lee did not only put Malaysia on the world map, but also united the rakyat.

He expressed hope thata Chong Wei’s fighting spirit will continue with the new badminton players.

“Once again, thank you Chong Wei for your contributions to the country. You are our hero forever,” Dr Wee said.

The former world No. 1 badminton athlete announced his retirement from professional badminton on Thursday (June 13) after an illustrious 19-year career.

In all, he bagged 69 titles throughout his career. They include a staggering 46 titles in the now-defunct Superseries – the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) top-flight circuit.

He also spent a whopping 349 weeks, including a 199-week streak from 2008-2012, as the world No. 1.
