PUTRAJAYA: Lee Chong Wei will get his wish to go to the Tokyo Olympic Games but as the country’s chef-de-mission.
The Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said that after discussing with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria (pic), they have decided to hand Chong Wei the role.
“We cannot think of anyone better to fly the Malaysian flag high and also to inspire our young athletes,” said Syed Saddiq.
“Although Datuk Lee Chong Wei chose to retire, his fighting spirit will not be suppressed and will burn in the hearts and minds of our athletes, not just in badminton but all athletes.”
Norza, who is also the Badminton Association of Malaysia president, added that the world will miss a badminton legend whose ability and skill on court has mesmerised many.
“I’m very sad as we will no longer witness a legend whose style and grace on the badminton court have inspired many to watch and take up the game,” said Norza.
“Sad as I will no longer have a legend who is always dependable but have also inspired others to wear the Jalur Gemilang with such pride and honour.
“It has been a privilege to have served and been involved in badminton during his time whose many achievements particularly at the Olympics have united this nation like no one can.
“Be it the Olympics, World Championships, Malaysians regardless of colour, race, religion or political differences have watched and prayed for the boy from Penang to bring us fame and glory on the international stage.”
Norza remained positive that Chong Wei will continue to contribute to the sport.
“I am hopeful and sure that he will remain amongst us.”
