Faiq-Hong Quan face familiar foes with revenge in mind

PETALING JAYA: Selangor men’s doubles pair Faiq Masawi-Lok Hong Quan will be looking for revenge against Federal Territories’ Bryan Jeremy Goonting-Low Han Chen when they meet again in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) quarter-finals today.

The two pairs met three days ago at the same venue, the Setia City Convention Centre in Setia Alam, where Faiq-Hong Quan lost to Bryan-Han Chen in the men’s team quarter-finals as Selangor went down 1-3 to Federal Territories.

Faiq-Hong Quan now have a chance to make amends and are determined to avoid another defeat, especially as they are the defending champions after winning gold at the previous edition in Sarawak.

“If possible, we hope to repeat what we achieved in Sarawak. We don’t want to think too much. We just have to believe in ourselves and play to our strengths,” said Hong Quan.

Faiq-Hong Quan booked their place in the quarter-finals after comfortably beating Perlis’ Shakif Farhan-Syed Mohd Zubair 21-9, 21-7 in the second round yesterday.

Bryan-Han Chen, meanwhile, had to work harder to overcome Penang’s Chew Jun Wei-Tiow Shi Qin 21-16, 21-15.

“We don’t really know much about our opponents here at Sukma, so we just try to play our game and give our best,” said Faiq. “It doesn’t matter whether our opponents play well or not. What matters is how we perform on court.”

Winning the Sukma gold would also be a welcome lift for Faiq-Hong Quan, who have gone almost a year without a title. Their last title came in September last year when they won the Malaysian International Series in Johor Baru.
