Ministry looking into incentives for teachers who furthered education

GEORGE TOWN: The Education Ministry is in discussion with the Public Service Department (JPA) to provide incentives to teachers who have furthered their education, obtaining Masters and PhDs.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said they were looking into the matter.

He added that the ministry has also agreed to provide insurance coverage for teachers who accompany students to programmes held outside their school.

"The insurance will be fully borne by the ministry.

"We have noted the complaints on the SOP (standard operating procedure) of teachers having to use their own vehicles to transport students on field trips.

"We hope the announcement will bring a sigh of relief to all teachers," he said during his speech at the national Teachers Day celebrations held at Setia SPICE Arena in Bayan Lepas Thursday (May 16).

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad officiated at the celebrations hosted in Penang this year.

More than 3,500 educators participated in the event themed "Guru: Obor Hemah Menyinari Pertiwi" (translating roughly to "Teachers: Beacons that light up the nation"), inspired by a poem by A. Samad Said).
