Former Sabah CM says proposed Constitutional amendment hollow and meaningless

KOTA KINABALU: The proposed amendment to the Federal Constitution that will reinstate Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners is hollow and meaningless, says former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee (pic).

“The proposed amendment to Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution seeks to lump Sabah and Sarawak in one sub-section (b). That is all,” he said.

Yong added that Law Minister Datuk V.K. Liew failed to comprehensively understand the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

He added that Liew and Sabah DAP secretary Chan Fong Hin have ignored that Article 160 of the Constitution states the 'The Federation' means the Federation established under the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957 (MA57).

“Indeed, the proposed amendment tabled by Liew in Parliament on Thursday (April 4) reinforces MA57 instead of honouring the Malaysia Agreement 1963,” he said.
