KOTA KINABALU: A woman claiming to be a police deputy superintendent (DSP) was arrested after she allegedly had the cheek to send feelers to the Semporna district police headquarters that she had been transferred to take over a certain position.

Semporna district police chief Supt Peter Umbas said they felt something was amiss when one his men got information that the "woman officer" claimed to be newly posted to their district and wanted to meet him (Umbas).

"We received no warrants of transfer. We suspected something was not right," he said when contacted Saturday (Feb 2).

According to Supt Umbas, police raided a hotel where the 43-year-old woman was at, claiming to be an officer from the narcotics divisions of the Melaka police contingent.

He said the police asked the woman for her warrant card but she could not produce it.

"She admitted that she was not officer," he said.

Supt Umbas said police recovered a police uniform form complete with the DSP rank with the name "San", police-issued shoes, a Bukit Aman commercial crimes notebook and two receipts from a hotel and another from a Faris business outlet.

"So far we have not received any reports of anyone being cheated by her. Any member of the public who might have been a victim should come forward and assist police investigations," he said, adding that they were still trying to ascertain her motive.

Supt Umbas said that the woman had been coming in and out of the district for last one month.

He said they are investigating her under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a police officer. If found guilty, the woman faces a maximum of two years in prison or a fine or both.
