Marine police seize fireworks worth RM2mil

JOHOR BARU: The marine police have seized fireworks worth more than RM2mil for the New Year cele­bration here.

State police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said following a tip-off, marine police raided a house in Taman Pulai Bayu near Iskandar Puteri at around 4.15pm on Monday.

“We arrested four men, aged between 18 and 25 at the house which we believed is used by the syndicate as a store for the last two months.

“Six hundred boxes containing 29 different types of fireworks worth RM2.08mil were found inside the house,” he told reporters at the marine police Southern Region Two headquarters here yesterday.

Besides the fireworks, marine police also seized four mobile phones, a lorry and a van.

Comm Mohd Khalil said the suspects were remanded until today.

On another matter, Comm Mohd Khalil said police also arrested eight men, aged between 18 and 30, for being involved in a fight near a mall in Skudai here during the New Year celebration.

He said the suspects were remanded for two days under Section 160 of the Penal Code, which carries up to six months in jail, a fine of up to RM1,000 or both.

“The suspects were fighting over a spray foam during the celebrations,” he said, adding that all those arrested were sober and tested negative for drugs.

He also said the crime rate in Johor dropped 8.56% from 11,307 cases in 2017 to 10,339 cases last year.
