‘No compromise on public order’

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has promised that those involved in the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots and related incidents will face the law.

Besides attempted murder, police investigations also included arson, rioting with weapons, causing injury with a weapon, trespass, possession of dangerous weapons, mischief and statements inciting breach of peace.

“I would like to stress that the government will not compromise with anyone who threatens peace and public order, especially by fuelling racial sentiments.

“Stern action based on the law will be taken by the authorities to defend our unity, safety and harmony,” he said when explaining the chronology of the incident to lawmakers in Parliament yesterday.

He said the police have identified several individuals who played a role in the incident and they will be hauled up for investigations.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Chambers will work closely with the police to bring the full force of the law against anyone implicated in the riots.

Attorney General Tommy Thomas said there was an urgency when dealing with situations where law and order was threatened.

He said the Chambers had been briefed by the top-level management of the police force over their ongoing investigations.

“In view of the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter, I have directed that the file is handled at headquarters level,” he said.
