KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian coastguards rescued a Norwegian couple who was stranded for four days at sea after their yacht, Colona 2, was hit by engine trouble while sailing from the southern Philippines to Sabah’s northern Kudat waters.

The two were rescued at noon yesterday about 2.7 nautical miles from Pulau Banggi.

Kudat MMEA commander Boon Chin Chau said both of them were found safe but they were running low on food after encountering engine problems last Friday.

MMEA did not release the names of the couple.

He said a patrol boat was deployed to find the couple after Kudat Maritime Operations Centre received a distress call from the boat yesterday.

The yacht had been towed to Kudat port by a fishing trawler.

Those in trouble within Kudat waters can call Malaysia Emergency Respond System (MERS 999) or the Kudat Maritime Operations Centre at 088-611 858.
