IPOH: A baby was among five people burnt to death when the car they were in collided with a trailer along the North-South Expressway, near Kuala Kangsar.
State Traffic Investigations and Enforcement chief Supt Ahmad Adnan Basri said the 41-year-old driver of the trailer that was transporting iron ore lost control of his vehicle.
“It then swerved to the right lane of the expressway, some 9km after the Menora Tunnel,” he said.
“The trailer hit several vehicles before dragging the car all the way to the right lane,” he said of the 11.50am accident yesterday.
The car driver, he added, was squeezed between the concrete divider and the lorry. “The car then burst into flames and all five occupants of the car were trapped,” he said.
The remains of the victims were taken to the Kuala Kangsar Hospital.
“Firemen had to cut open the roof of the car to retrieve the remains,” said Supt Ahmad.
The trailer driver from Alor Setar, who was heading from Johor Baru to Penang, was unhurt.
The accident caused a massive crawl along the expressway. Until late evening traffic was still slow-moving as PLUS workers removed the iron ore using an excavator.
