KUALA LUMPUR: Former Minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar (pic) has joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), months after quitting Umno.
The former Home Minister sent his membership application form to Parti Pribumi deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
“After sending in my form, I met with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. I am now a member of Bersatu,” he told a press conference at an event here on Tuesday (Sept 25).
In June, Syed Hamid left Umno, saying that he had become disillusioned with its struggles, and pointing out that the party's ideology and philosophy had been twisted to become intolerant, self-centred and undemocratic.
On Barisan Nasional’s decision not to contest the Port Dickson by-election, Syed Hamid said this was the correct decision.
He also said that it was Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s right to contest the by-election since it was agreed to by the Pakatan Harapan component parties.
The Election Commission (EC) has set Sept 29 for nomination day and Oct 13 for polling day.
The parliamentary seat in Negri Sembilan was vacated by MP Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah of PKR, after he resigned on Sept 12 to make way for Anwar.
In GE14, Danyal won the seat with a majority of 17,710 votes against Barisan's Datuk V.S Mogan and Mahfuz Roslan of PAS. - Bernama
