TOP Chinese star Fan Bingbing, who dropped out of public view for more than three months, had made an online appearance albeit for about five minutes.

Amid speculation that she had fallen foul with the authorities for tax evasion, Sin Chew Daily reported that she was “seen” briefly on Weibo, China’s popular microblogging site, on her birthday on Sunday.

Netizens saw a birthday message on her Weibo before it was swiftly deleted.

Fan, reportedly one of China’s highest paid actresses, has more than 62 million online followers.

In a commentary piece, the Global Times said the authorities should reveal Fan’s whereabouts to ease public concerns.

A state-run Chinese publication, Securities Daily, confirmed that the actress was placed “under control” and would “accept the legal decision”.

Fan is said to have used “yin-yang” contracts, which allowed her to collect large sums of money by signing multiple deals for a single film project and evade taxes.

Such contracts are illegal in China.

> Another top name from China embroiled in a tax evasion scandal is film director Feng Xiaogang, who has apparently been detained by authorities, Sin Chew Daily also reported.

The news came after the movie Ash Is Purest White, which Feng starred in, cancelled its test screening.

Actress Shao Xiaoshan claimed that Feng had been detained.

Earlier on Weibo, the director dispelled talk that he made use of loopholes in contracts to avoid paying taxes, insisting that malicious rumours were being circulated about him.
