GEORGE TOWN: Penang has finally received the green light to build People’s Housing Project (PPR) in all five districts in the state, announced Penang Housing, Town, Country Planning and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.
Describing the move as "positive", Jagdeep said Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraidah Kamaruddin had written to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow on July 31 asking the state to identify land for the PPR to be built.
"The letter requests that Penang identify land to build the PPR, and we will be getting 15,000 houses for all five districts in the state.
"If we can achieve this, we can solve housing problems faced by mostly low-income groups," he said during a press conference Monday (Sept 3).
He also said among the areas identified is a 40-hectare land in Jelutong.
Jagdeep said if the 15,000 units are built, the state may also consider putting up half of them for sale or rental.
