PETALING JAYA: The word “merdeka” means being independent, which is the wish of a special group from the Beautiful Gates Foundation for the Disabled.
Some 10 disabled participants and 11 of their helpers from the foundation will take part in the #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk.
The foundation’s co-founder Sia Siew Chin said most of the participants are adults with cerebral palsy.
She said they were excited to join the walk and had been talking about it for days, adding that it would be their first time taking part in a major event for National Day.
“We cherish this opportunity provided by the Star Media Group. It will be a sweet memory for all of us.
“We are eager to be part of this patriotic event. We hope the public will also take a moment to interact with us,” she said.
Sia also said Malaysia should be more inclusive when it comes to the disabled.
“We need barrier-free roads and facilities to support the lives of the disabled. Help us live independently by planning cities with universal designs in mind.
“This will enable everyone to move freely and open more doors of opportunity for us,” said Sia.
